R.I.P. Sherman Hemsley

Such an ICON for so many reasons..

Actor Sherman Hemsley, who became a television icon for his portrayal of George Jefferson on his hit sitcom "The Jeffersons," has passed away at the age of 74. The star died at his home in El Paso and the cause of death has yet to be revealed.

Hemsley was an accomplished stage actor and part-time musician, but is best remembered for George Jefferson, who was one of the most beloved television characters of all time. "The Jeffersons" was a part of the first wave of popular Black sitcoms and was unique its portrayal of upwardly-mobile Black people and interracial marriage--among other issues.

Several hip hop stars shared their reaction to Hemsley's passing on Twitter.

"Dam Sherman Helmsley aka #GeorgeJefferson passed away. Grew up on that!! #RIP," Big Tigger tweeted.

D-Nice revealed that Hemsley's iconic George Jefferson character helped motivate him. “Growing up, all I wanted to do was live in a high rise building with a doorman,” D-Nice said. “RIP Sherman Hemsley. Thanks for the inspiration.”

“It was an Honor to know and work with you,” MC Hammer tweeted.” Thanks for all the laughs :)”

Growing up the debates were Fred Sanford, James Evans & George Jefferson. I still watch Jeffersons reruns to this day. Amen was another great show that showed his talents and swag. Plus he called em Honky on TV.
